Drupal is perhaps the most flexible of the open source content management systems and many developers refer to Drupal as a content management framework as opposed just a content management system. The reason for this has to due to the fact that there are roughly 10,000 add-ons to Drupal that not only expand its capabilities but can also be mixed and matched to acheive custom functionality. This makes Drupal very very powerful but also slightly more difficult to initially configure. On the other hand once Drupal is properly configured it is still very easy to use and administer.

Like many CMS applications Drupal comes out of the box with features such as user management, polls, contact management, blogs, and a good base to start a social networking site. Through the use of add on modules it can be expanded to handle extremely high volume websites and large member websites. That is why sites such as The White House and MTV are using the Drupal platform.
